We are interested in the name GARLING and have been trying to track a Gr. Grandfather, Samuel Henry Garling born approximately 1830. He arrived in Antigua, West Indies as a young man and married Harriet Maria Caddy b. 1832. He was a Merchant residing at Scott's Hill. They had three children (1) Harriet Mary Garling b.01/01/1857 d.08/11/1940 (2) Henry Charles Garling md. Anna Isabella Hartman and (3) Caroline Garling md. Sam Goodall. He apparently often left the island by ship.

Juan Carlos Garling commented:
Your Samuel Henry GARLING must surely be an Englishman, because :

  1. Samuel is a Bible name you will find in England but not habitual in Northern (Protestant) Mecklenburg
  2. Antigua was part of the British West Indies and there was little reason to emigrate there for a German. Your grgrandfather may have been a British seaman who happened to arrive there, liked the country and decided to stay.
